OFFEND THE GODS 10/VI/16
I.
Rain falls on my house
Rain falls on my heart
Blight falls on my crops
Spreads all through my land
My daughters disobey
And my son acts like no son of mine
They wound me with muttered words
And my castle turns to sand
All because I have offended the gods
I mocked thee
and the rain wouldn’t stop
--
II.
You think you’ve got it all sussed out
(He thinks he’s got it all sussed out)
Your words no more offend us, child
than ants offend the feet that crush them
Your tribute’s paid in blood and grain,
And not in words, and not in praise.
Rain falls, for it must
Rain falls, for it can
Rain falls for all men
Rain stops for no man
--
III.
Oh, but I hear you!
I’m not deaf, little people
Oh, but I see you!
I’m not blind, little people
You run your mouths but
I’m not hurt, little people
I keep my cool, but
Know your place, little people
Maybe you’ll pay tomorrow, my little people
Maybe you’ll wait for ages, my little people
But when your time does come, oh my little people
All must bow down before me, my little people

IV.
Falling, I’m falling, I break before my own weight and I’m falling
I brace myself to catch me as I’m falling, I’m eight feet from the ground
Elsewhere in the world, I lay in perfect stillness
I’m pregnant with a billion hungry lives and I’m six feet from the ground
I stagnate. I drive your roots to madness. I poison and I rot them.
I’ve lived upon this cold wet soil forever, I’m four feet from the ground.
The old man would brand his flesh a traitor. The young girl’s smile is brazen.
I live inside the wetness of her mouth and I’m two feet from the ground.
“Oh father, you would curse the skies for raining down, as they have done for ages,
yet call me an apostate for wielding an umbrella when it showers”
I’m everywhere at once. I see all truths as equal and I’m falling.
I brace myself for impact. I’m one foot from the ground.
